Do You Think Organic Food Is Genuinely More Suitable For Your Health?

Organic food is certainly nothing new and has existed for a long time, however recently more people have been taking an interest in it and the word organic has turned into a big buzz word. People involved in the health food trade are making huge profits during this hype as organic food costs more then the non-organic foods found in the shop. As with every new fad, the question must be asked; Is all the positive reviews of organic food the true or is this yet another strategy to try and get more money from the general purchaser? Is the high price for organic food warranted?

Before I go any further I need to clarify what is meant by organic. The term "organic" in connection with food, signifies that it has not been altered unnaturally. Ionizing radiation, artificial hormones and chemically enhanced fertilizers are examples of things that are not used to accelerate or boost the food's growth or quantity. In relation to organic meat, eggs and daily products, these have had no antibiotics or growth hormones (GH) added to enhance the pace that they are produced.

In order to sell food and require it to be known as "organic", you will find there's requirement that the food has to be in produce for 3 years. For the very first two years the fertility of the ground needs to be developed and only after that are crops allowed to be grown. A lot of labor and time goes into organic food, therefore its no real shock that its more expensive. Then again, is all that hard work worth it? Can there be any other motive why I should be interested in getting organic food?

The good news is that there are actually many other good reasons to buy organic food. Firstly, organic food has more nutritional value then the non-organic alternative. Milk from cows that were organically raised contained, on average, 50% more Vitamin E, 70% more Beta Carotene, 2 times as many antioxidants and more Omega-3 than cows milk produced in the conventional way. Organic food is also free of the various chemically enhancing agents described earlier which commonly have a detrimental effect on your health. Whenever chemicals are included in food, it also increases the number of cancer causing substances which will be averted by using organic food. Many have mentioned that organic food also offers a better taste but that's typically just a personal preference.

In the event that you choose to use organic foods, the good news is that its also good for the eco-system. This is because organic food has not been force-fed any insecticides and pesticides when it is cultivated. Although this does take a whole lot more effort and time, it has a positive effect on the environment with the absence of the chemicals that are usually used. This will all contribute to a reduced degree of pollution during food production and thus will not have a negative effect on global warming. Additionally, it is important to be aware that when farm animals are bred on organic food they are also usually treated well so that they will also produce well. Unlike the small cages and the force feeding operations witnessed on many other farms, organically fed animals are often "free range" and are allowed to walk around in open areas.

So organic foods are ideal for the environment, your health and makes certain that the animals on the farms are treated well and not subject to abuse. Of course, as stated at the outset, the price of organic food can be much higher then regular food. But always remember that when shopping on the organic market you are doing something good for yourself and for the environment so personally I feel it is a small price to pay.
